Blessings in a Backpack (BIAB) is a national 501 C (3) non-profit organization currently feeding over 88,000 children in over 1000 schools in 47 U.S. states and the District of Columbia. The program is a hybrid of private sector funding and public partnership carried out in public schools. BIAB is feeding the future of America, one school at a time.
The Steering Committee of Blessings in a Backpack-Livonia (BIAB-Livonia) was officially formed in 2014 and that fall we started planning for our first annual “Bowling for Backpacks” event. This event was held at Merri-Bowl Lanes in November and was a huge success. We had 144 bowlers, 24 lane sponsors, and a very successful raffle and auction. With this event, we succeeded in meeting our $10,000 goal needed to begin sending backpacks home. On January 9, 2015 we distributed our first backpacks to students at Garfield Elementary.
In November 2015, we added our second school, Rosedale Elementary. On November 21, 2015 we held our 2nd Annual Bowling for Backpacks, which was another resounding success, and allowed us to add three more schools in the first half of 2016: Kennedy Elementary, Johnson Upper Elementary, and Webster Elementary.
We held our 1st Annual Trivia Night in April of 2016, and our 3rd Annual Bowling for Backpacks in November of 2016. A Cereal Drive in the spring of 2016 was an amazing success, with thousands of cereal boxes coming our way! For Thanksgiving vacation in 2016, generous donations from the Kiwanis in Livonia and Larry’s Foodland resulted in special Thanksgiving food bags sent home with over 200 at-risk LPS students. And thanks to Community Choice Credit Union and Larry’s Foodland, we were able to send home special Holiday Food Bags in December. In December 2016, we also added our 6th school – Randolph Elementary.
